Urban assault MD freezing problems

Urban assault MD freezing problems

Hi, i downloaded urban assault game because its one of games that i played when i was kid. I have played UA before without problems on Windows 7 and win xp. Now i have asus laptop with win 10. Everything is fine until game freezes and nothing can do, i need to log out from my Windows user and log in back to quit from frozen screen. I can play max 10 mins until game stops on that the game freezes. I have tried compatibility modes and everything that i can do to solve the problem. I dont know how UA:source Works on metropolis dawn version UA, like taerkastens version and ghorkovs version, these ones are game versions that i want to play mostly. So, game starts normally, everything is fine, i can play the game normally, but it just crashes to the screen freeze, like someone takes screenshot, but it repeats about 2 seconds before crash some sound. I copied ypa_log and it gives some fails about sounds. Can it be the reason for the game freeze? Here is copy of the ypa_log:

It's random crash or you have always ~ 10min? Also can you provide crash information from "Event viewer".
Not found 1a151.wav - it's file for scout-unit voice when you switch to control it. And if it's not found - it's ignored.

Where did you download from?
What folder did you install the game?

If we have bad download files we can get those removed.

I downloaded urban assault.tar.bz2 folder, from files.metropolisdawn(or something like it?). I extracted files from that folder to program files / microsoft games / urban assault. I would check event viewer, but at least problem is solved with ua source, i googled more how to play expansions with source exe client. 6 hours of playtime back, no freezes. But i can check this event viewer, it would be more than great to play urban assault with original client, i like more fullscreen than windowed version 🙂

Crashing after 10 minutes on Windows 10 sounds like what other people have reported. The exact cause is not known but I guess it's somehow related to Windows APIs that were changed in Windows 10. It might also depend on the graphics hardware and drivers. You can try different UA options and Windows compatibility options but it will require plenty of trial and error.

I don't have a computer with Windows 10 so I can't test this myself. But if you can get an error code or other details from error messages or the event viewer, Zidane might be able to find a specific bug.

UA Source is of course a good solution. It should work in full screen as well. Check the options.

Hello Hopleez, welcome to Stoudson Corporation!

Do not worry about the missing 1a151.wav, or any 1Axxx.wav files appearing in the log; those are scout satellite messages which do not exist in the final version of the game so it's normal. :!:

UA:Source works flawlessly with MD expansion and it does support fullscreen mode which can be adjusted from the option. If you wish to download complete Urban Assault game files, however, I recommend these two virtual disk image files instead. :mrgreen:
UASSAULT.mdf
UASSAULT.mds

They are full disk images which contain comprehensive UA files, and I highly recommend making use of them over everything else!

May I suggest highlighting UASSAULT.mdf/mds as a priority for UA file downloads? Personally, I can't think of an instance where raw packaged game files would be preferable over full virtual disk images. :?: Nowadays we also have Zidane's UA:Source which eliminates a majority of problems stemming from running the game files without a proper installation.

Thanks, i try it out when i have time to test it. I tried to find out something with eventviewer. It found from system folder in event viewer something error messages same time when hame crashed. So what do you need from the event viewer error messages? One problem is that my language is finnish, not english so it may be challenging for you 😬

I can't think of an instance where raw packaged game files would be preferable over full virtual disk images.
It's much simpler to use/play UA:Source when it's already in the zip archive :P a member on discord has done a good job packaging up UA/MD/Source into a single archive. Just unzip and play

Level, Source and EventID, and everything in the "General" and "Details" tabs. Check the "Application" section too. It may contain interesting messages as well.

If an error message or a pop up window appears when the game crashes, it may also contain useful information. I don't remember what it looks like on Windows 10.

Just remember that if you already have installed UA using the original installer, you should uninstall it using the uninstaller before you "install" it anywhere else by unzipping such a package. Otherwise the registry key can cause problems as it will still point to the original location.

This only applies to the original game of course. This does not apply to UA Source as it does not use registry.
