Liberty's screwed!

Post by Thomas Fredson » Thu Jan 19, 2012 9:22 pm

Today, I read that the U.S. government forced MegaUpload to close due to copyright infringement and other stuff like this...

That's a shame because a good half of what was uploaded these servers was legit things, and sometimes very important things! And because there was some illegal stuff, everything has to be shut down!
In my opinion, this a bomb in the web freedom... They begin with MU to finish with every website that does not fit in their code...

We have to react!

Meh... Wasn't hard to guess... I said this before and i'll say this again.. If the SOPA and PIPA are acknowledged by the US government it doesn't matter if the websites have 99,99% legit stuff on them... it's because there's that 00,01% that's "reason" enough for them to close WHOLE websites... jesus... Typical really.. Punish the many by the mistakes of the few..

Did either of you actually read the Alexandria Indictment?

These knee-jerk reactions are not helping anybody. If you look at the case the suit against Megaupload is not related to SOPA or PIPA but was probably undertaken for shock value in order to coincide with the debate in congress (or is a complete coincidence but I doubt this). The indictment was filed on January 5th and it is fairly clear from the text that the investigation had been ongoing since 2010 and probably much earlier as the actions charged date to September 2005 and were ongoing.

Furthermore the case is not against the users of Megaupload by rather against a specific set of users who led the organization.

Do your homework. Act like an adult.

Both of you are remarkably irresponsible and immature. The United States is, on the whole, still in the top ten five of freest states in the world. Grow up and develop some perspective.

The case against Megaupload was against the conduct of key members of the company, not file sharing sites in general. The chance the Rapidshare (and my account there by the way) is going to come under the same sort of litigation is not likely.

The Problem with the US government or from my ponit of view only the republicans are outdated or are only there to represent some big TNCs...

Anyways I don'T believe that the laws will be applied ( or how it is called). The line of supporters breaks away; and as said, WIKIPEDIA doesn'T go offline for no reason, I don't see any need for discussion.
Another thing with SOPA and PIPA is that it will most certainly only benefit TNCs which only care about maximizing profits and screwing nature and labour force ( not all TNC's do that but most of them)
GET YOUR HANDS OFF FROM THAT PARASITE!
Or
I LL QUADDA YOU

Don't be an idiot and spew these generalizations. PIPA was introduced by a Vermont Democrat Patrick Leahy. If you look at his political positions you will see that he is very left leaning and a major protector of civil liberties. Do you honestly believe that the Democratic Party is immune from special interests?

In recent years the greatest protectors of civil liberties have consistently been the libertarian wing of the Republican Party. Twenty-one of the twenty-three current and former members of the liberty caucus are registered Republican.
