ILBM files?

For those of us who are curious and like to poke around in the game's data files and scripts as well as glitching. Caters to anything from unit/building stats to level data to telling how to glitch and stories of game errors.

ILBM files?

Post by Edward Fox » Sun Jul 31, 2011 4:30 pm

Does anybody know of a free program that one could use to open and view (and possibly convert) ILBM files?

Thanks.

XnView can open and convert ILBM files, such as those used for UA icons and other map graphics, and Ultimate Paint can also edit them natively.

If you mean those "ilbm" files which contain the model textures and are found inside SET.bas files, they aren't actually ILBM (interleaved bitmap) files, they're VBMP files and I think the only program that can handle them is GoldStar's VBMP-BMP converter. They can also be converted manually using a hex editor and a template file. GoldStar has explained the process in a thread somewhere.

That would explain why I have been having trouble converting the files.

Do you know where the converter is? I assume it is in the "Anybody know where the model files are" thread but I have been unable to find it. (Maybe I'm just spazzing out.) :| Extracting all of the game's textures has been the pet project of mine for some time now.

Yeah, sorry for the posts that are scattered around the forums. Its amazing that I actually get anything figured out!!

Here is the post link to the VBMP converter, I called it uacnv.exe..and again it operates on the command line.

Maybe a link from the Wiki could clear things up instead of going through the posts again :D

The converter seemsto e working fine but I have a few questions. Namely do all of the SET.BAS files contain the same textures? When I extracted the images the contents of the SET.BAS folders were all identical despite being different sizes. Are there supposed to be six identical copies of information in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Urban Assault\DATA ?

All of the SET.BAS files yielded textures idntical to those of SET3.zip on viewtopic.php?f=23&t=372 .

Second, there are a number of BAS files in C:\Program Files/Microsoft Games\Urban Assault\DATA\OBJECTS with telling names such as NACHT2. I was unable to open these with GoldStar's Project1. I assume that some of these are sky textures. Is there an easy way to access these or should I just sit back?

Thnaks.

You are correct those are the sky files. You should be able to use the VBMP extractor to get the sky textures out of those BAS files too. Does the program run with no errors appearing in the console window and no files created?

And I noticed that too, that the BAS files are very similar but there are some differences in the buildings and you can tell easily which is the Mykonian textures

I followed your instructions and place both a BAS file and your Project1 into a new file. Then I run Project1 and I am able to extract texture files from SET.BAS files only. Other BAS files (such as those in OBJECTS) do not yield anything.

I suppose I will have to look more closely.

Yes, I spoke to soon.

Many of the textures from the SET.BAS files look the same but have some slight differences between them. (All seven sets have the same names though, and, though this makes sense it also had me quite confused.)

I will likely upload all SET.BAS the textures at a later point.

Thanks for all the help.

I will likely upload the texture files tomorrow or the day after.
