Urban Assault Playstation Prototype

Post by dr_kirk » Wed Nov 08, 2017 1:00 pm

Hi. I just wondered if anyone has played any of the Playstation prototypes, and what they think. I've been digging around the various versions and found some info that might be of interest. The best build seems to be the one dated 7th June 1999, which is version 1.04/A. This has marked improvements in graphics over 1.03, and seems to have all of the single player missions. However, the Death Match and CTF modes only load one mission. Version 1.05 does not seem to work at all.

There are some cheat and debug codes too. Pressing L1+L2+R1+R2 at the map screen in the 1.04 build will unlock all levels, plus give you access to all vehicles. I think there might be an equivalent code in the PC version.
When playing a level, pressing Circle and X seems to bring up some debug info, although I'm not sure what this relates to.

Overall, I like the PS1 version, despite the limits of its graphics and control system. I hope to develop some codes to play as the enemy vehicles and ships in the near future. Hope this is of interest.

Very interesting. I did not know the PlayStation code even ran. What emulator are you using? (If it's available for Linux I might give it a try)

I have tried some prototypes. Not all of them work but some do quite well. The non-working builds typically show a red screen or video mode mismatch error on startup. I'm not sure if they could be made work by adjusting emulator settings but according to the notes at Hidden Palace, the errors were apparently present when the developers tested the builds which was probably done on a real console.

Gameplay is quite good but squad management is much slower compared to the PC version. I have only played the early levels and I don't know how hard some later levels will be. Hamburger Hill might be challenging. :P

I've tried PCSX-R and Mednafen to play those. PCSX-R is probably the easiest as it has a nice GUI and it doesn't require a Playstation firmware image, although most people seem to recommend getting one. ePSXe is yet another popular emulator but I haven't tried it.

There are some videos on youtube about UA prototypes on a real Playstation console too. I don't know if it works simply by burning a disc, or if a mod chip is needed.

Nice find on the cheats. I haven't heard about them previously. The PC version does not probably have any cheat codes. This could be verified now that we have UA_source (see the thread) as well as the leaked source code. The "SWEAPON" cheat is mentioned on some cheat listing sites but it doesn't apparently work. It's probably not related to this game.

However, "cheating" in the PC version is pretty easy as all levels and vehicle/building properties can be easily modified. If the Playstation builds use similar formats, it should be possible to mod them as well. It would just require unpacking and repacking of the disc image.

Not all Ormus are mine. When in doubt, please ask...

Thanks for the comments. I've got the game running on ePSXe 2.0.5, as well as on my PSP. I'll have a look at the file formats for the PC and see if they're comparable. There may be some of the other Death Match/CTF missions are in there somewhere. I'll post any further findings here.
